Instinct above perfectionism: that’s the credo of multi-instrumentalist, rapper and producer Alfa Mist. The English musician creates music on the cutting edge of jazz, hip hop, rap and experimentation in general.
Alfa Mist taught himself to produce beats while still in school in East Ham London, discovering the world of jazz thereafter through the work of ground-breaking hip hop productions of Madlib, Hi-Tek and J Dilla. Obsessed, he explored the depths of the genre, taught himself to play piano and managed to get a handle on these styles in this manner. Through this, he developed a production style and a sense of rhythm that’s uniquely his own. Alfa Mist manages to translate his sense of melody to a unique and spontaneous flow in which styles like jazz, soul and hip hop are connected in an organic way.
2015’s “Nocturne” was his first full-sized solo project; a collaboration that showcased his own capacity for crystal clear beats, as well as his immense skills in producing music that constantly seems to change its form. On his latest album, “Bring Backs”, Alfa takes on new challenges. The album marks his first release for quality label ANTI and is the most detailed exploration of his music upbringing. The nine songs rely on mellow grooves that manage to hit hard; they’re in a constant mode of escalation, yet with melodies that stick in your mind. The songs are all inter-connected through a beautiful poem by Hilary Thomas, in which the reality of building a community in a new nation is expressed.
A new album “Variables” will come out in 21 April through ANTI. Tonight in Doornroosje, we will see Alfa Mist operate at his peak: virtuous and innovative, yet warm and inviting at the same time. Don’t miss this unique artist. Highly recommended to fans of Sons of Kemet Yussef Kamaal Yussef Dayes, Madlib, and Little Simz.
